We sat down to dinner the other night. Gracie had her plate in front of her and scarfed up all her broccoli. Here was the following conversation......
Gracie: Can I have mo blak-coli?
Me: Why don't you eat some of your chicken and mac&cheese?
Gracie: I wunt mo blak-coli.
Me: Eat some of your other bites first.
Gracie: sending a barrage of the following.... I wunt mo blak-coli!
Me: I stood my ground, telling her... Eat some other bites first.
weary of the whole tug-of-war conversation, Gracie looked over at Caleb's plate, looked back up at Caleb, tilted her head to one side, and with a squint of her nose says....
Gracie: Can I have yo blak-coli??
Caleb looked up at me, then Chuck..... we all just busted up laughing
On to Josh.....
After years of struggling with learning issues from his hearing impairment, teaching him and myself different behavior modifications to help him, and wanting to pull my hair out.... I finally had Josh tested for ADD. Symptoms of hearing impairment and ADD run parallel so I fought through out elementary school to keep him from being tested... I didn't want him labeled and I didn't want him on medication...
This year has been different than the last few. Josh is doing very well in school, he made the honor roll, but his level of anxiety has skyrocketed. I think maybe the onset of the hormonal teen years has really aggravated his ADD. Anyway... I took him to a Dr, who then sent him to a specialist, and Josh was diagnosed with ADD and a severe level of anxiety... we went to the specialist because the Dr couldn't determine if Josh's problems were ADD or a result of the hearing loss...
Josh gave himself a self-evaluation at the specialists. He gave himself high marks, which means he is aware that he is having problems. The fact that he is becoming aware is what made my final decision to start him on treatment.
We will discuss treatment options with the Dr around the middle of April

Be sure to look into "supplements" (vitamin) for Josh. There is a lot of information on the web. They helped Jacob bunches.

The borccoli story is cute. Reminds me of my 4 year old.
My niece is on concerta for her ADD. She was diagnosed when she was 9 and is now 13. She's done very, very well so far. I also babysit a boy who has ADHD and is on concerta. I didn't even know he had ADHD because it works so well for him.
I'm glad you have an answer and a path to go on. This is just the first step in getting him to a calmer place where he can concentrate. If he's doing this well now (honor roll, etc.), imagine what he'll be doing when it all gets sorted out!
Tell Josh your blogging buddy is proud of him!
Love the blok-coli story. An hey, you hav a kid begging for broccoli, let her have it. LOL. I HATED it when I was a kid.
You know, dietary is one options I've scene with hyper active kids. May not be the same as with Josh, but basically it's not sugars or wheats and lots of proteins and fruti, I think.
Remember to proclaim, DECLARE scripture over him.
Love you! You're a great mom. Tell Josh Aunt Rachel and Uncle Tony are proud too.
Love, R
You are brave to go for it. My oldest did this too. HIGH anxiety levels! He is 13 and has been off his ADD meds for awhile. He was never Hyperactive, just could not focus no matter how hard he tried. Now my second is doing the same thing, with some hyperactivity as well. It's a hard thing to resort to meds, because there is such a stigma surrounding it. Some people are so outspoken about how we just cop out and "stick" our kids on "drugs". But if it helps them; it's worth it.
Whether you treat the anxiety OR the ADD OR Both, you are doing what is best for your son. Way to go!!
Hey there! I know what you mean about not wanting your kid to be labeled and not wanting to put them on meds. I fought it for a couple of years with Brandon...but a few years ago, i had him tested and he was diagnosed with mild adhd...and he is on Adderral (or was until a couple of months ago) and let me tell you, it was wonderful for him! His behavior and concentration really iomproved and his grades and behavior scores have improved immensely. I think a lot of it the medication...although I think some is just the natural maturity that comes as they get older...but I would definitely recommend meds if they find they would help. Good luck!
And the broccoli story is so adorable!
