Yesterday morning the babysitter called me about 30 minutes into my shift. Chuck had no more than dropped the girls off. "Gracie has lice" ... Oh ICK!! ...
I called my boss and she came in early so I could leave. Gracie had made a few comments over the past few days that her head itched. With all this cool weather and the heat running I just assumed she was having some dry scalp. Wrong! I stopped at the store to pick up some lice shampoo and spray, grabbed a few groceries and headed south.
I stopped at the house real quick to unload my groceries, strip all the beds and start a load of laundry.... one of many loads that would be washed yesterday... Out the door again to get the girls. Gracie had some nits and one bug visible. Suzie didn't have any on her head.... but everyone will be getting a hair washin'...
3 hours and 3 loads of laundry later I have our three heads washed and combed. Gracie was such a trooper and sat still for the better part of an hour while I parted, picked and parted her hair. Around lunch time we ran to the drug store to get some shampoo for Chuck and the boys. I told Gracie that since she was such a good girl we would get McD0nalds for lunch.
After lunch I continued spraying furniture, washing brushes and cleaning hair strands off bathroom floors. The thought of these little boogers in my house and the idea of rewashing hair and laundry kept me moving. I called the Dr office to see what, if any thing, needed to be done with all their stuffed animals and baby dolls. The recommend bagging all those kind of toys in garbage bags for two weeks. Needless to say, I ran out of garbage bags and had to make a run back to the store.
Sometime around 2:30 and into my 6th load of laundry.... but the piles didn't seem to be getting any smaller.... I decided I would go ahead and steam clean the carpets. It has been in desperate need of it for several months. I called Chuck and had him rent one from the hardware store.
The boys got off the bus. I gave them instructions on how to use the shampoo and sent them to the bathroom. It was their night to stay over at their dads, which was a good thing because I hadn't even gotten to their bedding yet.
Somewhere into my 9th load I realized it was dinner time. Chuck was stripping tobacco so I just heated up some left overs and made the girls a picnic on the kitchen floor.
When Chuck came home he helped me move the furniture back. We rearranged it a little differently. It makes a little more room from one aspect, but crowds the dining table area. I think we will leave it like this til after Christmas so I can put the tree in front of the window.
Before the girls went to bed, Chuck and I picked through their hair for the 3rd time. Suzie was clean but I picked out two nits and found one bug on Gracie.... *SIGH*... At the thought of EVER having to do this again I decided to stay home another day and wash our hair out again.
Before 8:30 this morning I had all 3 of our heads washed and started in with the laundry. I still had two big loads left over from yesterday and now I am going to rewash bed linens. Gracie was nit free but I did find one dead bug.
I hear the laundry buzzer so I gotta bolt

I so feel your pain! Andy had a case of lice when he was in kindergarden. I was so glad he had short hair! I never did so much laundry in 1 day. If it make you feel better, we never had another outbreak!
Bek, I wish I could have been there to help you. I feel so bad you had to do all that by yourself. I'll pray this takes care of it and you won't have anoher outbreak.
Love Mom
This is the absolute worst. I had a breakout when my kids were much younger. Such a nasty, nasty job.
I remember picking through my daughter's hair and trying to describe to her six year old satisfaction what the bugs were like without completely freaking her out.
I was calm and cool and controlling my combined horror and revulsion and then... I SAW ONE!
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!
I think we ended up doing the bedding thing twice.
Ugh. I still get willies. I hope you get 'em all, lady. Watch the playmates for a while, they'll reinfect iffen you ain't real careful like.
you poor momma!
truthfully, guests (bugs and family) are the only things that make me CLEAN clean. ya know? almost a blessing in disguise. almost, but not quite.
Oh word! Get them gone before I come! LOL.
I had a stomach bug. Threw up 4 times. How's that for gross.
See you soon!
Oh, Bek! What a nightmare! It made for a good blog, though! LOL
Lice is my worst nightmare. I remember having it as a kid and what my mom went through. I don't ever want to have to do it.
Yuck! I remember having them as a kid. My mom was freaking out. I am not looking forward to being on the mommy end of it..but I'm sure I will be eventually.
That doesn't sound like a fun way to spend your day! But, at least your carpets are clean!!
You poor poor thing!!
I had lice when I was small, pretty sure I got it from sharing batting helmets at Tball....
I can remember it being horrible.... I think it is one of my biggest worries when the kdis start school!
