Hectic Day at Work

I've been so busy camping and swimming that I haven't had too much time to post. But the other day was a crazy day at work, one of those days that you just want to scream for the merry-g*-round to stop long enough for you to jump off.... actually I love my job; the crazier it is, the better...
So anyway, here in Quietville it started out as any other day. Around noon I got a call from one of the Gas-n-Sips saying they had just been robbed.....
Short bit of info here for non-law enforcement citizens....
Robbed: means you have been held up at gun point or put in some fear of your life while the theft was taking place
Burglarized: means someone broke into your house and stole items
Theft: means simply, items were taken with or without your knowledge
....ok, back to the story. The attendant just said they had been robbed so my first concern was if they were actually robbed. I asked if a gun or other weapon was displayed. She replied no. What actually happened was two guys came in and distracted the attendant with questions while a third male went into the back and stole the money. So this would be a theft.
She gave me the vehicle description and I put the info out into scanner land.
It was a cluster of radio traffic and phone calls for a few minutes. Several departments are three different radio frequencies.... wanting to pull my hair out but loving every second of it... By one o'clock the vehicle was lost and the radio traffic came to a screeching halt. Then....
Bam! The entire town went out. No electricity. Being a 911 dispatcher we have a back up unit that is supposed to keep my phones and radios powered at all times. Uhm... it didn't work. I lost everything!! Once the generator kicked in, I was back in business.... and the phones lit up. Everyone in town decided to call the P*lice to tell them they were out of power and wanted to know why..... of course they didn't think to call the Electric Co. that would make too much sense... We were fielding calls left and right. My boss couldn't get an open line long enough to dial out. Finally after several minutes of in coming calls, she told a caller that if people would quit calling the p*lice about their power being out, she would have time to call the electric co to report the outage.
... note to citizens, when your power goes out, pah-lease don't call the p*lice. Thank you...
Shortly before I left work the power came back on. One of the factories had locked up some sort of circuit. I left worked jazzed, pumped up! Only to came back the next day to a few parking complaints and to run a couple license checks..... *Sigh*

O.M.Gosh I don't understand that either!! Why people call 911 when their power goes out!! This is police, fire, and medical! So unless grandma is on oxygen and needs the fire department because her oxygen machine isn't working, don't call us! But it never fails, when I suggest calling the electric company, they say "Well, I'm afraid someone's trying to break into my house!" Then I ask if their neighbors have electricity and they say "No, I think they're going to try to hit the whole block!" Umm, yeah.

They call 911 b/c they have it memorized. They have to get off their lazy butts to go and look up the electric co. number.

When I worked at a local credit union, we would get calls all the time from our members asking where such and such was and the phone # to the place. What do we look like, 411? They had our # memorized (b/c they called ALL the time) and didn't want to bother looking it up. I would usually say, "I don't know, but I bet they are listed in the Yellow Pages". If I was feeling nice and wanted to "help" I would tell them to hold while I looked it up in the PHONE BOOK....then they would hold for a long while. ;)

Hey Rebekah! Sorry I haven't visited or commented in a few days. Its been busy with company here for the weekend. I atually still have a couple or your posts I need to catch up on. Sorry you had a crazy day or I'm glad yo u had a crazy day, since you seem to like them that way - haha. I like them in between - busy enough for me not to be bored, but not so crazy that I can't get anything done. That drives me CRAZY!

Hope you had a good weekend. Talk to you soon.

Happens all the time here too. I love it when they try to convince me that it is an "emergency" because they have a "heart condition" and they "need" their air-conditioner. Yeah, right.

"I'll be happy to send you an ambulance, sir. They can take you to a hospital where there is "air conditioning". What?? Not THAT KIND of emergency?? Well, call us back when it is. In the mean time, I would suggest that you report it to someone who can actually help you.....like the power company."

Here, in my county, the Po-leese aren't the primary PSAP...we are (Fire and EMS). Anyway, sometimes I just feel the need to "share the wealth", so to speak, so I'll transfer the idiots to the Sheriff's Office just for fun. They get away with chastising the public for misuse of 9-1-1 quite a bit more than we do. For some reason, we're required to be "professional". So I'll just click em over to someone who can let 'em have it, push "mute" and listen in. Inevitably though, the S.O. will call and "ask" us to quit. (Buncha uptight #%@ $<*?")
