Some More To Think About

As I have posted before, this years election has got me fired up. One of the biggest issues is the idea of univeral health care. The thought of this being just a step away from reality scares the ever livin' life out of me.... appropriate enough since we are talking about health care...

*side note: Chuck was putting a door in the shop of one of his customers. The shop owner was talking politics, leaning toward the demo cratic side. After the shop owner stepped out, Chuck turned to the employee behind the counter and said, "Man, he's lucky my wife isn't here" I got a good little chuckle when Chuck told me that* Anyway, back to my original post

A friend of mine was telling me about a co-worker whos wife is expecting. She has been terribly sick with all those out of whack pregnancy hormones. I am sympathetic to her affliction. While I was pregnant with Gracie, I was on the verge of puking 24/7 and was dropping weight... not that I would complain about losing weight, but being pregnant was not the time for that... Well into my 15th week and still losing weight, my Dr prescribed me some relief... Ah, Phenergan.... a little pill I loved so much.. I am not big on taking pills so just imagine how bad it was for me to actually ask for some. On the brink of having my stomach barf out of my mouth for 15 weeks solid put a new meaning on the word 'miserable'.

So anyway, back to this other lady's nauseating story. The Dr prescribed her phenergan and a variety of other medications, trying to alleviate her misery. None of these drugs offered much relief. As a final straw, the Dr gave her a pill used to treat nausea in cancer patients during chemo. It worked like a charm, with one teeny, tiny draw back. The cost of this formulated love is a whopping $2500!!.... Holy Canoly, Batman!...

However, there is a little bit of light at the end of this tunnel. The insurance did agree to pay a portion of this astronomical price once the Dr wrote a detailed report on just how sick she was and how these others pills did nothing for her.

Around the same time that my friend told me of this woman's plight, I read a post over at Mostly Cajun.... I'll wait a minute so you can go check it out.....

Reading about how health care is being handled in these two Countries is frightening. Do you think that a universal health care policy would afford this woman this expensive medication? Or for that matter, would it even allow for simple little expenses such as phenergan? "Pregnancy is a natural thing. Morning sickness is all part of it. Deal with it."... I can hear them say.

In today's advancements in technology, isn't this taking a step backwards? Yes, pregnancy is a natural occurrence, but we don't live in the dark ages anymore either when amputations were done without an anesthesia.

That comparison is probably a little off base but that is the direction a government run health system would take. I reiterate, the plans that some candidates have for our country is alarming.

The mere idea that they consider themselves the best person to make decisions for us, that they want us to vote them into office so they can strip us of our blood bought rights and freedoms as American citizens sends chills down my spine.

I'm also scared to death of universal health care. I see enough problems already with government rules where I work. These rules are set by people who really have no idea how things work. Also we deal with all the insurance regulations. Universal health care would add to it. I have a friend whose parents live in Canada and her Dad has bladder cancer. I can't believe some of the things she has told me he has had to deal with in his treatment.

How much our lives parallel on some points is scary -dispatchers, divorces, dads, our love of firefighters ;o) and now the morning sickness thing. Yeah, I had the same thing. 4 months of all day sickness. Lost 15 pounds! I soo wish someone would have offered me that pill!

Your brother just sent me this qoute and it's so true! Its from the Louisiana Governor:
"The same people who rightfully criticized FEMA and the slow government response (during Katrina) want the SAME government to run our health care. Don't they see the irony?"

There are no easy answers to health care. It's a quagmire. On one hand, you have some well-meaning folks on the left who want to make sure that people who cannot afford health care will get taken care of. I believe their intentions are good. On the other hand, you have a system that tries to balance capitalism and government requirements that has gotten out of control. Who's fault is it that a particular drug would cost so much money when it could do so much good? Ask the pharmaceutical company and they will give you one answer. Ask the government and they will give you another.

The only way it will get "fixed" is if the private sector and the government sector can agree on some things--and that will require big change on both sides that will result in the loss of money, jobs, etc.

I don't have an answer. But I agree with you that government is not the way to fix it.

Rebekah,

Think of the three worst operated government institutions...the post office, the DMV and our public school system...

Now why would you want them running your health care system?!?

When are people going to wake up!!!

Great post my political pal!

I always compare how the DMV is run to how socialized healthcare would be.....are you kidding???!!!

I guess it will come down to selling all my earthly belongings if we ever need serious health care treatments b/c I know the gov't won't be backing me. Then I'll have to apply for WIC, disability, and other federal aid.

All we can do is spread the word, vote, and PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!!

It breaks my heart what you guys have to go through sometimes in the US - yes there are problems with the health care system in Canada but the idea that an illness or a sick child or an accident can bankrupt you is teerifying to me...

I agree with big doofus (ok it's just funny to type that name while discussing a serious subject :). I don't want gov't run care but our system is very broken as is. I too have heard horror stories from people in Canada - a woman almost lost her life bc of a pregnancy that was let go WAY too long. They wouldn't bother to do an ultrusound to check how big the baby was getting (mom had gestational diabetes) and she was overdue by 2 weeks - baby was over 12 lbs!!
Anyway, a tough issue with no easy fixes..exp when neither side are willing to give an inch.
