More Gracie Bits #3

Gracie is always popping off some funny statement or comment. I run to the computer when she comes off with a good one and jot it down real quick to put in a post at a later date. I have about four short stories of things she said and done over the past month.

*****
Josh doesn't like carbonated drinks so I buy him some Hawa11n Punch in aluminum cans. Gracie normally drinks milk or juice from a cup so I can control how much sugar is in the juice. She loves to drink out of "pop cans" so every now and then I will let her have one.

One evening Gracie got herself a juice can. It was close to bed time so I told her she couldn't drink it now but I would let her have it when she got home the next afternoon from the sitters. She happily agreed and skipped over to the refrigerator, "Ok. I'll save it in here so it will be cold." Turning to me, hands on her hips, eyes narrowed, "and don't let Josh and Caleb drink it"

Shortly after we got home the next day, she remembered her 'pop' and asked if she could have it. I motioned toward the frig and she ran to get her drink. Handing it to me, I popped the top. Caleb walked in, "Hey I want one." To which Gracie spun around and replied with attitude, "You go get your own." Caleb smiled, "Fine." and walked over to get him a drink.

Some time had passed and I was sitting at the computer. Gracie had been playing in her room and came out to get a drink of her 'pop'... the kids have to keep their drinks on the kitchen counter... There were two cans sitting there, Gracie's and Caleb's. Gracie looked at them for a second and then reached for one of the cans.

She carried the can over to me, "Mommy, can you read this?"

I didn't turn to look at her but I could see she had the can in her hand. Puzzled as to why she was asking me to read her can, "Yessss??"

"Well," she started, "Does this can say if it's my drink? Or Caleb's?"

She has caught my attention so I turn to look at her. With a little laugh, "What?"

Taking a deep sigh, re-asking her question, "I can't read this." pointing to the label of the can, "Is this my name or Caleb's?"

A big grin spreads across my face, trying not to laugh at her, "It doesn't have either name on it."

Looking the can over, confused, "Well!" huff "Then how do I know which one is MY drink?"

I could tell that this was a real issue for her and she was getting somewhat frustrated. I took the can from her. Looked it over. Shook it a little bit. And handed it back to her, "This one is your drink"

Slowly she took the can from me, staring into my eyes. With the can in her hand she began to walk away. I could see the wheels turning in her head. She stops. Turns back to me, head cocked to the side, "Are you sure this one is mine?" Doubting my decision.

Trying to hide my amusement with mock confidence, "Yeah. That one is yours"

She took a drink and placed the can on the other side of the kitchen counter, far away from the other can. I don't think she wanted to go through that whole thing again.

I have a skype account so I can talk to my sister on the computer. The girls love to talk to Rachel on the computer because they can see her. One afternoon I was sitting at the computer watching a video clip of Rachel talking about her new book. Gracie came in the room and saw Rachel talking.

"Hi Rachel. Can I see your puppy" Gracie leaned up on the computer desk.

Not realizing what Gracie was thinking, "Gracie get down so I can see"

"Mommy, I wanna see Rachel's puppy." Turning her gaze from me back to the computer screen, "Rachel I wanna see your puppy."

Finally catching, "Gracie. I'm not talking to Rachel. This is just a video..." Hmmm, how do I explain this to a 3 year old? The difference between a video and real life- on the computer???

At a loss for words to explain, "Hang on Gracie. Let me close this down and I'll see if Rachel is on skype." Gracie looked a little confused as to why I just turned off Rachel if I was wanting to talk to Rachel, "But I want to talk to Rachel"

"I know. Hang on a sec." I could see that Rachel wasn't logged on so I asked Gracie to run quick and get my cell phone... I would just call Rachel and have her log on...

If I remember right, I got Rachel on her cell and she wasn't at home to log on. The next evening Gracie wanted to call Rachel so she could see her puppy. Rachel was logged on so I clicked on the green phone.

Gracie finally got to say hi to the dogs, Mrs Lola and Mr Pal.

Chuck has super long, dark eye lashes. A few nights ago he was sitting in the recliner and Gracie was up in his face being silly. She hopped down of the couch and ran back to the boys room where I was doing my exercises.

"Hey Mom!" Gracie has an ornery little grin on her face.

Looking over my shoulder at her, "What Gracie?"

She puts one hand on the door knob to steady herself as she leans forward like she is going to tell me a secret. With the other hand she points to her upper eyelid, "Daddy has GURL eyes on top!" (that would be "girl eyes")... She pretends to giggle, pressing her fingers against her lips to suppress her smile.

I smiled as she ran out of the room. Her voice carried down the hall, "Daddy, I told Mommy you have gurl eyes!"

It was getting close to bed time and I had a full evening of picking up toys, dishes, laundry, and re-picking up toys. I told Gracie to get her teeth brushed. In her attempt to rinse out her toothbrush, she had the water all over the bathroom sink.

With a heavy sigh of I'm-tired-of-picking-up-and-I-just-want-to-go-to-bed, "GRACIE! You MADE a MESS!"

Gracie pushed her step stool back into place and sweetly replied, "I didn't mean to, Mommy."

*sigh* "I know." grabbing a towel to wipe off the sink. "I am just tired of cleaning up."

Gracie's attitude did an about-face and with a twitch of her head side to side, "Sorry 'bout yo problems!"

I snapped my head in her direction to bark at her for being a smart mouth. Her arms were open out to her side, palms up. Her head was cocked and a crooked smile spread across her face. At seeing her, I breathed out a little chuckle, not sure if she meant to be smart-alec or was just trying to get me to laugh. I tossed the towel in the laundry room, "Common, Gracie. Time for bed."

Oh my goodness those were cute stories! Thanks for sharing. I'm with you on the trying to explain technology to a youngster (the skype story) - they look at us like we are idiots don't they? LOL

Hey Bek, these are too cute - what a little sharpie.

NOW, why are YOU picking up THEIR toys . . .hmmmmmmmm????? Sooz and Gracie should be picking up and putting away. Take a load off your shoulders. If you don't teach them now you will have problems later. I think Josh and Caleb picked up their toys at this age.

LOVE YOU MUCHO, Mom

PS, I agree w/Joanne - you could take your blogs of the kids and your family and turn them into a wonderful book - I think people would love reading things like this.

What a life you have--full of irritations that are outweighed by the love.

I love your take on the everyday things of life. Sometimes it's easy to get so caught up in our everyday problems that we miss what our kids are saying and "meaning". Put you really have your finger on the pulse of little Gracie. You're a good mom.
