It's been a busy week with baseball, kids, storms- I was trying to decide what to write about but now I don't really feel like writing about anything.
For the most part I love my job. What I don't like is when kids become involved. It's sad when the kids are delinquents and bring 'it' on themselves. It tears at my heart when I have to send EMS to call involving an injured child. But what really sets me on the verge of a tear-jerking ordeal is when the kids are innocently involved by the stupidity of their parents.
This morning our Detective brought in a lady to interview as the top suspect in a crime (Yeah, she did it)... the charge will probably be something like theft or fraud. maybe just probation, but more than likely she will have some jail time.. When she came on station she had her two girls with her. The oldest one is about 11-ish. The younger girl is probably right at 2.
Being a mother, it's hard not to superimpose my kids into the situation. As soon as I saw the face of the littlest girl, my heart screamed "Suzie". The mother went back to the interview room while her kids waited in the lobby... they are safe in the lobby. I monitor the lobby and have quick access if they need something... I peeked a few times at the kids but tried not to pay attention to them... knowing I would start crying if I did...
About 20 minutes later, the older girl came up to my window asking how much longer it would be. Realizing that they would start getting fidgety, I looked for some coloring books or something. Stepping into the lobby I asked if she wanted a drink. The older girl started crying... oh please don't do that. Now I am gonna cry... I left the room to get her a tissue, rolling my eyes to the back of my head and blinking in an attempt to shut off the water works.
I mentioned to the Chief that she was upset. He immediately went to the lobby and sat with the girls, putting them at ease. The fire department brought over a couple stuffed animals. I could see that the girls relaxed a bit.... but my heart still churned when I looked at their faces, knowing that bed time tonight -in their world- might be completely different...
Uncertain of what is going on. Sitting in a cold 4x8 room with nothing to do. Only strange faces to talk to. A locked door between them and their mother. Not knowing that she might not be home tonight to kiss them good night, or if she is at home, home life won't be life as usual.... I can't imagine my kids in an emotionally unstable place such as this...
Ok, I can't go on or I will start tearing up.... I just want to wrap those kids in a hug and make everything ok for them

..ugh..
my heart breaks for kids who deserve so much more than it feels like any of us can offer. don't get me started on the foster care system!
What a frightening time for those little girls. It is so sad to think of them, especially when you picture little Suzie and Gracie in that situation.
You feel so helpless but remember you can pray for them. The Lord see them and knows them. Ask Him to watch out for them.
Oh, gosh, now you have me crying. How awful for them. You have such a huge heart girl.
My sil is a social worker for child welfare, her hubby is a police officer. She does not have kids, I don't think she ever will. She has just seen too many awful things.
In regards to your moms comment. AMEN. Just think of all the people praying for that family now that you have told us. Good for you; you really did do something for them.
Will
Those poor girls - so sad to be in that situation through no fault of their own. Your Mom is right - we need to pray for them
I agree with you. The hardest part of this job is anything having to do with kids. It's especially hard when they are right there in front of you, and you look into those faces. It sounds like you have a really wonderful chief.
That is sad! I wish that kids did not have to go through those situations. I hope that somebody will come into their life and show them a loving way to grow up and to get out of that heartache.
Oh those poor babies! They should NOT have to go through that ever. Sometimes I think you should get a liscence to have children. But then again I might not pass that test...ok maybe not!
