Acluistic

Acluistic (A-clue-is-tik)... "A" being the prefix meaning in contrast, opposite, against... Without a clue, lacking in sense. Key in the ignition but no gas in the tank. The butter has slid off the pancake

Ok, ok, I wont go on with the cliches. I think you get my point of the meaning of this word. Which, by the way, I can not claim as my own. I heard a speaker use it once during a conference. I thought it was so cute and cleaver that I added it to my own vocabulary.

So- to explain the reason I am introducing this word to you today. Of recent, I have shared with you about our local experience with Hurricane Ike and his aftermath. Sunday's storm knocked out 90% of the Electric companies users. 90 percent is quite a big number. I think the newsies said it was 700,000 people out of power.

Now that's a lot of houses to hook back up all at once- it's gonna take a few days to get it done. Yesterday afternoon there was still 130,000 people without power. That's a lot of people, too- and 4 days without power can make a person cranky. In their cranky mood, some of these people are blaming the Electric company- saying they aren't working hard enough, they aren't working fast enough, they need to do more, calling for an investigation into why it is taking so long to get their power on... Helloooo? A hurricane basically blew threw here....

One news channel has bashed the Electric company in to the ground. Every hour more and more power is being restored- but it still isn't good enough. They are interviewing every extreme disgruntled citizen, demanding to know why ALL the power wasn't restored immediately after the storm... 90% was knocked out and they want it back on instantly?... our guess is that a big wig at that news channel must be one of the people without power... I had one woman call the PD asking if the reason her electric wasn't fixed was because she lived in low-income housing... it's no a conspiracy lady, sometimes life just happens...

Lets put this in perspective- First of all, there are people in Texas that don't even have a house left standing, let alone no electricity. Be grateful you still have a roof over your head.

Secondly, nearly all the power lines were damaged in some way or another... tree limbs fell on them. Trees knocked poles over. Some poles broke in the hurricane force winds. Transformers were damage when the lines were compromised, some of them were smashed when they fell to the ground.

But some people don't care. In this 'get-it-now-immediate-gratification' world, people lose site of the bigger picture... which I think they let run rampant in all areas of their life... The employees of the Electric company have been working night and day, not seeing their own family, missing out on sleep and not getting good meals to eat. Yet the news reports on how poorly they are doing their job... ya know, I wish we had some way to report on reporters and let the world know how bad they are doing their job...

I would like to take this time to thank all those working on restoring electricity, and any and all workers that go unappreciated. There are still some of us that know you are working hard and appreciate your efforts.

And to those "Acluistic" ones out their... well, not much I can say. You will probably never change.

All this ties into the current political race- those that want to steal from the rich to give to the poor. those that bulk up their paycheck while the laborers get laid off. those that let greed or laziness control their decisions in life- but that is an entirely different post

WOW Bek, YOU SAID!! I could go on & on about the liberial media, the greed/selfishness/I want it & I want it now attitudes plus the I'M A VICTIM attitude - our Country is really sliding down a slippery slope fast. Thank goodness there are those of us who knows from whence cometh our help - The Lord God our Father and Savior Jesus Christ.

Thanks Bek, great post - wish you could put it in a newspaper or several of them actually!
Love you

That last paragraph is spot on. Too many people on both ends of the spectrum are trying to get everything for themselves for little or no effort on their own part.

And, yes, many have become accustomed to getting exactly what they want NOW. Waiting a few days for power to be restored is not such a big deal... as long as the hospitals and other emergency facilities have already been reconnected. I worry about what it will take, how big and heavy the clue-by-four will need to be to wake up some of the acluistic people in the world.

Good post. It all relates to selfishness and everyone having a me first attitude!

Those who complain are surely the ones who don't realize that the power companies will fix the big things first. If they can fix one transformer, sub station, or other piece of equipment and get 100,000 customers online right away, they will. Then the transformer out in the boonies, that serves 50 customers will wait.

Those guys and gals work in all weather, at all hours, for us. And just like the police, they can't be everywhere at once.

Patience is a virtue most people these days don't possess.

Great post and great comments too Rebekah. I know a lot about all this cause I sort of work IN the utility industry. Not directly, but our conference caters to these men and women who are out there day in and day out. I'm sure they are doing the best they can.

Wow, you guys got it worse than we did here in Texas!! (my part of Texas) - We didn't get that much.

Wow, I guess maybe ya'll up there aren't used to dealing with power outages from hurricanes huh? LOL Down here along the Gulf Coast when we lose our power from those stupid storms, people go out of their way to be extra nice to our power guys! We take bottled water to them and hang signs on fences thanking them and telling them how marvelous they are...a little kindness goes a LONGGGGGGGGGGGG way! LOL
