The Candy Bar

Suzie and I stopped at the store before picking up Gracie and Caleb from school. While standing in line at check-out, Suzie politely asked if she could have a Kitkat... her new favorite candy bar... I agreed and told her to get one for Gracie... a healthy after-school snack...

Suzie stood in line holding the two candy bars. I realized we should probably get one for Caleb too so I grabbed a Twix and told Suzie it was for Caleb.

A lady and her son... about Suzie's age... were in line in front of us. They needed assistance from the manager so the cashier went ahead and rang me up. Suzie grabbed the two Kitkats and the Twix. I handed the cashier my money and the lady in front of me handed me back the Twix bar.

Apparently Suzie thought we bought the Twix for the little boy in front of us and gave him the candy bar. I smiled at the lady and thanked her for returning the candy bar as she explained what just happened. Suzie turned shy all of a sudden.

I smiled at Suzie and patted her head, "That was a very sweet gesture Suzie, but that's Caleb's candy bar." Suzie shrugged and acted a little embarrassed. I paused for a minute and serioulsy considered handing the boy the candy bar... ya know, one of those "teach your kid to be selfless and sharing"... But then I didn't want it too seem like it was an after-gesture, plus I wasn't sure if the mother would appreciate it considering I didn't ask her permission to buy her son a candy bar.

Suzie and I grabbed our items and all 3 candy bars and headed out to the van. Upon further reflection of the situation, I wish I would have asked the mother if he could have it. But, would I have let some strange person hand my kids a candy bar in the store? Probably not
